The Culture Creator

"The Culture Creator VI" is an activity divided into several phases. Phase One, "CMUNC Lesson: Culture", took place on Friday, October 21st, 2016. Phase Two, "CMUNC Exercise: Building a culture", took place from Friday, October 21st, 2016 to Friday, January 13th, 2017. Phase Three, "CMUNC Exercise: Exposition of a Culture", is set to take place on Saturday, January 7th, 2017. The activity allows CMUNC-I members to get familiar with cultures, how they evolve and what they are made of. It also allows them to express themselves when exposing their cultures, and allows them to display any talents they may have in the creative arts to the CMUNC-I.

Story

July 22nd, 2024 AD - Tokyo, Japan, Earth [Japanese TV: お知らせ今日 (Oshirase kyō)]

Good morning.
After the twelfth major earthquake of this month strikes Paris next week, the number of deaths due to natural disasters this year is estimated to rise to over 17 million as of yet.
The French government is doing all in its power to save as many people as possible, but the mentioned estimate takes an optimistic intervention into account. In other news, the ISC (International Space Committee) released, late yesterday night, that they have found a planet on which human life may be possible, and they will begin to study it up close within the month.
Science-God will hopefully prevail over the evils of nature in time to save humanity.

February 2nd, 2038 AD - London, UK, Earth [English TV: SENT (Space and Environment News Today)]

Good evening.
The ISC has declared in a press conference today that its members have finished preparing for the expedition that will tell us all whether or not planet Voti Spes will be the answer to our prayers.
Planet Earth is becoming violently inhospitable and the end of all things, in the words of Lord Walter Edgard Raleigh Samuel Winter-Scott the third, is imminent. The ISC will be sending a crew of today’s most eminent scientists to Voti Spes, whose name is latin for Vow of Hope, on this Sunday, 7th of February. We pray all the cosmic luck be with them.

January 5th, 2040 AD - Mecca, Arab Kingdom, Earth [Arabian TV: الأخبار اليوم (Al2a5barulyawma)]

Good evening.
The International Space Committee has just released that it has lost all contacts with its line of space ships, headed for planet Voti Spes since 2038.
The report states that the Committee has calculated the expenses of sending a rescue mission after them and deemed them above affordable budget.
Prayer will be held this weekend in the holy cities of the planet for the souls deemed lost as of now.
God have them.

Tjα 37th, 689 RC (late 2481 AD) - Zεniδ, Zαrlanδεrz, Rafa Rafa [Zαrγiδvεn TV: TVZ]

Note: RC is for Rafan Calendar.
Good afternoon!
The International Space Committee has just released that planet Voti Spes, which was thought to be able to host human life in 2024 AD and then rejected as impossible to land on in 2040 AD, is now being reconsidered.
Indeed, the S.E.A.R.C.H. telescope has discovered human individuals, and yes, I said human, on Voti Spes.
The scientific community agrees that the origin of these humans would be the team sent in 2038 AD (roughly 40 RC): that team would have landed successfully and these people would be their descendants.
Since yesterday, the ISC has been preparing a team of biologists, sociologists and anthropologists to study these people.
An estimated fifteen generations would have passed since the landing, estimated to have happened between 2040 and 2042 AD.
You can keep up with the news of this expedition in real time on the ISC’s website.
Thank you for listening.

Assignment

As a team of the 2038 ISC expedition's descent, each group of members of the MUNOCC, is to come up with all the constituents of a unique culture and expose them to the entire club and Culture Creator Judging panel (who is the 2481 team of ISC expedition). The culture groups are to come up with everything and be sure each of its members know all about it from Monday, November 2nd, 2015 to Friday, January 15th, 2016, and will have about an hour to expose their culture after posting everything you wish to say on this wiki.

Grading

Grading will take place in two timeframes: between Monday, November 2nd, 2015 and Friday, January 15th, 2016, the Judging panel will be studying the cultures for logic and coherence on the Wiki (so not posting on the wiki will make culture groups lose marks), and upon exposition on Saturday, January 16th, 2016, the Judging panel will be attempting to experience each culture live. This includes each of the following bits of culture. Note: each team needs to have at least the following six bits of culture to even be considered a part of the competition. The essential six bits are the following:

Six essential bits

  • Habits and beliefs:
    • Tradition
    • Religion or beliefs
    • Food
  • Communication and arts:
    • Language
    • Music
    • Representational arts (one at least)

Assistance offered the participants

Please refer to the CMUNC-I sections of 21 October to 3 November on the CMUN Moodle website.

Hints given the participants

  • Lessons! There is a wealth of information on how to create a Culture in store for you in the coming weeks.
  • be careful to make your culture responsive to the environment (esp. geography) of the planet it lives on.
  • keep in mind that you will be graded in the following bits:
    • Cultural value (as in, how impressive your culture is)
    • Effort on the personal work (as in, how impressive the bit you gave your culture is)
    • General knowledge on your culture (as in, how much you know about it in general)
    • Expression when given the floor to explain your culture (as in, how relaxed and explicit you are in explaining your bit in your culture).

The activity was originally inspired by a 22nd World Scout Jamboree activity called Rafa Rafa, which involved creating some traditions to get familiar with cultural interface.

The material created or to be created does or can make references to, J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings' universe, G. R. R. Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice's universe, James Cameron's Avatar universe, and C. S. Lewis's Narnia universe; as well as zompist.com's LCK and PLK.
